The last week of August marked the 38th National Traditional Country Music Association Festival in LeMars, Iowa.
Local songwriter Sue West of Martell performed 5 shows as part of the festival, and she received her second cd award for excellence in songwriting, folk singing, and recording.
Her first award from NTCMA’s Rural Roots Music Commission was in 2009, for “Sue West Live.”
The 2013 award was for her new cd, “Words Of a Friend.”
Sue said about her journey and the award: “Accolades such as this do not come along every day, and are deeply appreciated. Thanks to those wonderful folks down in Iowa, for the honor, for the camaraderie and great tunes, and for feeling that my music should be preserved and recognized!”
Sue’s 9-year old son Mick West was also recognized, with a Festival Youth prize of a new guitar from Prairie Dream’s music of Kansas.
